Working with Adult Patients

Visitation Volunteer
Any day, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Volunteer functions as an ambassador of goodwill visiting and interacting with patients, families and staff. The volunteer's mission is to lift the spirit and reduce the emotional suffering of those who are ill and alone. He or she seeks to communicate in ways that show compassion and concern by bringing encouragement, hope and joy to patients who might otherwise have no visitors. The volunteer's role is to care and to listen.

American Cancer Society Visitation
Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
One or two volunteers needed per day. Volunteers are referred by healthcare professionals to visit patients and families in the inpatient oncology units to provide emotional support and increase public awareness of American Cancer Society services. Volunteers also staff the ACS office where information is provided to the public.

Outpatient Clinics
Monday - Friday, mornings or afternoons
Volunteers work in outpatient areas to help provide a welcoming environment. You will provide customer service, emotional support and comfort to patients, families and visitors. You will assist staff with general and clerical tasks and coordinate support groups. Working in a clinic provides an opportunity to expand one's knowledge of a specific field of medicine. Volunteer opportunities exist in the following clinics:

Partners in Care

Partners in Care
Any day, 7 a.m. - 9 p.m.
Volunteers assist nursing staff by providing general non-clinical support to patients and families. Volunteers perform various tasks such as distributing and retrieving meal trays, serving ice and water, touring families around the unit and hospital, delivering lab tests and assisting with patient transportation. Partners in Care may be assigned to:

Pet Visitation
Monday - Friday, morning or afternoon
Shands Jacksonville's pet visitation program ensures a positive experience for patients, visitors and staff. Our policy allows dogs and owners that meet certain requirements to visit patients. The dogs must have a certification from a veterinarian of their inoculations and temperament. The owner also must go through a volunteer orientation. The pet visitation dogs are recognized by their Shands Jacksonville badges. If you are interested in the pet visitation program, please print and fill out the following forms in addition to the standard volunteer application:

Arts in Medicine
Monday - Friday, morning or afternoon
Arts in Medicine volunteers offer creative and artistic activities for patients, families and staff to enhance the healing process. These activities may include painting, crafts, drawing and music. Amateur and professional artists of all talents from the community are encouraged to volunteer.
