Art & Winefest 2009 - Tiny Hands, Big Hearts - August 2009
The Shands Jacksonville Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) saves the lives of hundreds of newborn infants each year. This five minute video, shares the miraculous story of three-pound twins born to Eddie and Jill Hilliard. They were treated by a multidisciplinary team of UF physicians, Shands Jacksonville nurses and other specialists. Today, the girls are healthy and living active lives. [watch]


Stroke Center receives the American Stroke Association’s Silver Performance Achievement Award - July 2009
The Stroke Center has received the American Stroke Association’s "Get With The Guidelines" Silver Performance Achievement Award. The award recognizes the hospital's commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care. This is the highest award possible for a hospital that has participated in the program for one year. [watch]


Suns visit Shands Jacksonville - July 2009
Peter Bragan, President of the Jacksonville Suns and four of his players visited patients, posed for pictures, signed autographs and even gave blood during their visit to Shands Jacksonville in early July. [watch]


9th Grader Presents Research at UF’s Medical Education Week - April 2009
A 9th grader from Darnell Cookman’s School of the Medical Arts (SOMA) presented his research alongside University of Florida physicians at their medical education week in late April. Tony Hansberry developed a technique that reduces surgical time for minimally invasive hysterectomies while volunteering at UF’s Center for Simulation Education and Safety Research (CSESaR). The director of CSESaR, Bruce Nappi, took Hansberry under his wing allowing him to work with the same equipment and high-fidelity mannequins that physicians and nurses use in training. In addition to getting the attention of UF physicians, Hansberry’s project took second place in the regional science fair. His story also got the attention of media from around the world. [watch]

The Shands Jacksonville Neuroscience Institute and the Jacksonville Suns teamed up to host the Second Annual "Strike Out Stroke" Night at the Baseball Grounds. [watch]


TraumaOne visits John E. Ford Elementary School - April 2009
TraumaOne hosted a Safe Walk at John E. Ford Elementary School. Approximately 700 children participated as they learned how to safely navigate busy roads to and from schools. [watch]


Queen Smith: 50 Years - July 2008
Queen Smith, who has worked at Shands Jacksonville for 50 years, has been a role model for younger nurses. [watch]


Level 1 Trauma Center at Shands Jacksonville - March 2008
Shands Jacksonville's trauma program is widely recognized as one of the largest in the nation, seeing almost 4,300 patients annually, of which about 2,500 are admitted. [watch]
