For every family who waits, the long hallway in TraumaOne at Shands Jacksonville becomes the primary focus for husbands, wives, children and close friends—without invite or warning. Their priorities and daily schedules are irrevocably shifted as a loved one clings to life.

Portraits of Hope, a photographic exhibition located on the 8th floor in TraumaOne, serves as a portal of hope and possibilities for all who pass through this particular corridor.

Arts in Medicine at Shands Jacksonville brings permanent legacy to the science of hope with eleven TraumaOne patients’ intimate accounts of their progression through near-fatal accidents and their roads to recovery. Each story emphasizes the impact we have on one another: strangers who offer immediate help, medical teams who use precision and compassion to save lives, and family members who sustain and comfort. Without exception, each story results in a deepening of core faith.

This colorful panorama depicts TraumaOne patients blanketed by the branches of Jacksonville’s Treaty Oak. This shared landscape serves as an icon of strength and local historical relevance. Held in place by a network of roots and home to a complex ecosystem of life, Treaty Oak serves as a symbol to acknowledge the unyielding compassion, integration and skill of the TraumaOne medical team.

Over 200 years old, this horticultural landmark has weathered the forces of winds, fires and floods; yet stands today more powerful, peaceful and beautiful than ever. Synonymous with the compelling beauty and power of the testimonies and faces of the honorees in the Portraits of Hope, we hope that you will find this sampling of TraumaOne history to be truly inspiring.
