TraumaOne to Teach 700 School Children Pedestrian SafetyMonday, April 20, 2009 TraumaOne is hosting a Safe Walk at John E. Ford Elementary School Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at 9 a.m. Approximately 700 children are expected to participate as they learn how to safely navigate busy roads to and from schools. Childhood pedestrian safety is a serious issue. Close to 630 children are killed in pedestrian incidents each year in the U.S. According to safekids.org, children under 10 lack the maturity needed to make critical decisions about road safety. They are also unable to properly gauge the speed of vehicles, putting them at greater risk for injury and death. Here are some other startling statistics: • Eighty-three percent of child pedestrian deaths occur at non-intersection locations • One-in-four deaths occur between 6 and 9 p.m. • Males account for almost two-thirds of childhood pedestrian deaths • Black children have a pedestrian injury-related death rate almost twice that of white children TraumaOne’s prevention team wants to change those statistics and prevent tragedy. The walk at the school wraps up three days of classroom instruction on how students can safely navigate busy streets. In addition to the walk, students will be treated to the landing and a tour of the TraumaOne helicopter. Media is invited to attend the Safe Walk event outside the school, located at 1137 Cleveland St. #### TraumaOne is the region’s only Level I trauma center, treating more than 4,000 patients annually. Despite common perception, TraumaOne actually sees more victims of motor vehicle crashes than any other kind of injury. Last year, car and motorcycle crash-related injuries accounted for 51 percent of the 4,019 patients seen at TraumaOne.
