Shands Jacksonville Stroke Center recertifiedTuesday, December 30, 2008 The Shands Jacksonville Stroke Center successfully completed its second recertification as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission in November. The Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization that reviews and accredits healthcare organizations, has several disease-specific certification programs that oversee the quality of care in defined areas, such as stroke. Shands Jacksonville is also certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration. Shands Jacksonville is one of four stroke centers in Jacksonville and one of only two Comprehensive Stroke Centers in North Florida. While the final report has not been received, Shands was notified verbally at the end of the review that there were no deficiencies or need for follow-up, indicating a successful review. Shands Jacksonville currently treats 50 to 80 new stroke patients each month. With the help of TraumaOne Flight Services, Shands has expanded the coverage area of the stroke center to include rural areas surrounding Jacksonville. Patients have successfully received disability-reducing treatment known as tPA- tissue plasminogen activator after being transported as far as 100 miles to reach the stroke center. The program received positive comments on its community and EMS educational initiatives. Shands Jacksonville is involved in multiple research projects to expand and improve care for stroke victims.
