UF adds new fellowship-trained surgeon to Breast Health CenterTuesday, December 09, 2008 Laila Samiian, MD, an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville, is the newest addition to the team of physicians and specialists at the Shands Jacksonville Breast Health Center. Samiian is the first fellowship-trained breast surgeon recruited to the UF College of Medicine-Jacksonville. "I wanted to join a multidisciplinary team of breast specialists and be a part of a breast center of excellence in a high-volume academic setting," said Samiian. She received her medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine in 2000. Samiian completed a general surgery residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich. From there, she was accepted at Stanford University of School Medicine where she completed a breast diseases fellowship. Most recently, Dr. Samiian was on staff at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. Samiian’s professional experience at the Mayo Clinic included the organization of weekly conferences that focused on the management of current breast surgical patients. She was a member of the Comprehensive Breast Tumor Board at Stanford University. Shahla Masood, MD, UF College of Medicine-Jacksonville professor and chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and medical director of the Shands Jacksonville Breast Health Center, said she is delighted to have Samiian as part of the multidisciplinary team of physicians at the center. "The recruitment of Dr. Samiian as a fellowship-trained breast surgeon is a reflection of our commitment to excellence in the quality of breast healthcare that our patients deserve," said Masood. "She is definitely an asset to our program." Samiian has given several presentations on breast disease. She is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, American Society of Breast Diseases and the American College of Surgeons. Her academic research has been featured in American Surgeon, Clinical Breast Cancer, European Journal of Pharmacology and the Journal of Trauma. As the newest member of the breast health team, Samiian plans to streamline care and management of patients being evaluated for breast disease. "I believe we can have the best breast health program in Northeast Florida and serve as a benchmark for our community," said Samiian.
