Shands Jacksonville is First Hospital in the Southeast with VeinViewer TechnologyFriday, September 22, 2006 Children's Miracle Network funding is allowing Shands Jacksonville to be the first hospital in the southeast to bring VeinViewer technology to its patients. The VeinViewer is a device which takes away the need for multiple needle pricks, essentially giving a nurse x-ray vision. It works by using a harmless infrared light to highlight all the red blood cells underneath the skin. A video camera then projects those veins onto the skin's surface ensuring patients won't become human pin-cushions. It's no wonder Time magazine named the VeinViewer one of the "coolest inventions of 2004."
The VeinViewer is especially useful when dealing with children and cancer patients who have weakened veins due to chemotherapy. The military is also finding the device helpful in treating injured soldiers on the battle field. There are even applications for Homeland Security purposes. Much like a retinal scan, no two people have the same vein pattern.
The Children's Miracle Network provided Shands a grant that allowed the hospital to purchase this high-tech piece of equipment.
