Stroke
Since every second counts, the Shands Jacksonville Comprehensive Stroke Program team can mobilize around the clock to diagnose and stabilize stroke patients, minimizing the risk of permanent disability and preserving quality of life. The program, which received the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval for stroke care and Agency for Health Care Administration accreditation as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services for the diagnosis, management and rehabilitation of stroke patients. Such sophisticated care is important because research shows that patients improve faster and recover more completely when managed in a dedicated stroke facility.
Multiple Sclerosis
The Shands Jacksonville Comprehensive Multiple Sclerosis Program - recognized by the north Florida chapter of the MS Society as the only center of excellence in north Florida - provides compassionate care that involves a team approach of medical specialists, all working together to provide MS patients with the highest quality of care and resources for the best possible outcome.
Neuro-Oncology
The University of Florida Division of Neurosurgical Oncology at Shands Jacksonville provides comprehensive treatment for tumors of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. The multidisciplinary program combines the experience and talents of University of Florida neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists and medical oncologists to provide the most effective treatment possible and offers the resources of the region's only proton therapy institute.
Neuromuscular Disease
The Neuromuscular Disease Program at Shands Jacksonville provides comprehensive treatment of neuromuscular diseases, including facial and other cranial nerve palsies, Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS), nerve compression syndromes such as carpal tunnel syndrome, myasthenia gravis, peripheral neuropathies, neck and low back disease, and muscle disorders. The program offers the latest in intervention, diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disease and has access to the resources of the University of Florida McKnight Brain Institute.
Peripheral Neuropathy
One of only 13 Neuropathy Association-designated neuropathy centers in the country, the Shands Jacksonville Peripheral Neuropathy Center offers comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and support for peripheral neuropathy. This progressive disease primarily affects the hands and feet, causing tingling, numbness, and pain. Other symptoms may include muscle weakness, cramps and loss of muscle control. University of Florida physicians offer the latest treatment options, including intravenous immune globulin (IVIG).
Epilepsy
The Shands Jacksonville Comprehensive Epilepsy Program is a multidisciplinary service that offers patients the latest diagnosis and treatment options for epilepsy care. The University of Florida physicians come from various disciplines and are committed to providing state-of-the-art care to improve the quality of life of their patients. The program is headed by full-time, board-certified physicians who are subspecialty trained in epilepsy and electrophysiology, and includes a full-time epilepsy program coordinator, nurse research coordinators and pharmacists.
Sleep Disorders
The mission of the Sleep Disorders Center at Shands Jacksonville is to offer the highest quality of diagnostic and medical treatment procedures for all sleep disorders in a quiet, comfortable environment. The center features a multidisciplinary team led by board-certified University of Florida faculty physicians who specialize in sleep medicine. In addition, our facilities serve as a source for advanced studies and research in sleep disorder treatment.
Movement Disorders & Parkinson's Disease
The Shands Jacksonville Movement Disorders and Parkinson's Program provides comprehensive treatment of Parkinson's disease and other types of movement disorders. The center is staffed by full-time University of Florida physicians who are fellowship-trained in movement disorders. A full-time nurse coordinator educates patients and caregivers and assists in patient care. Physicians, pharmacists and nurses provide patients with medication management and education. A full-time research assistant evaluates interested patients for clinical research studies.
Neurosurgery
The University of Florida Department of Neurosurgery at Shands Jacksonville provides inpatient and outpatient services for the diagnosis, management and rehabilitation for patients suffering from diseases of the nervous system, its supportive structures, and vascular supply, such as brain tumors, aneurysms, epilepsy, movement disorders and spine diseases.
