The parathyroid glands are small glands in the neck located behind the thyroid gland. These glands serve an important function in controlling calcium levels in the body. When they become overactive, they cause dangerous increases in calcium levels that can damage bones and kidneys, if allowed to continue over a long period of time. Although medicines can control high calcium levels, surgical removal of the diseased glands is the only cure for the condition.
