Diagnostic Procedures and Evaluations

Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy

Once the patient has been given a local anesthetic, the physician will use an aspiration needle to obtain a sample of bone marrow. The procedure generally lasts less than 15 minutes. There is usually no pain, or only a slight discomfort, when the anesthesia wears off.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I be put to sleep during this procedure?
No. General anesthesia is considered excessive and potentially dangerous for this type of procedure.

Will I be in terrible pain?
No. You will be given adequate local anesthesia. As the procedure progresses, you will be informed of times when you might expect discomfort; additional anesthetic can be provided.

When can I take the bandage off?
The bandage can be removed within 12 hours or when you bathe.

Treatment Options

What to Expect

Your physician will give you a thorough explanation of the procedure, including possible side effects, toxicities and potential complications.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my hair fall out?
It depends on the particular medication used. Not all chemotherapy regimens are associated with hair loss.

Can I work?
In many cases the patient is able to continue working; however, there are instances in which patients will need to rest, working on a part-time basis or not at all.

Am I going to be very sick after the treatment?
No. We make every effort to provide treatment before, during and after chemotherapy to minimize, hopefully eliminate, side effects.
