The University of Florida Department of Emergency Medicine at Shands Jacksonville is divided into treatment areas according to a patient's condition, age and chief complaint.
Trauma Center
The facility houses a Level I Trauma Center and has an aeromedical rescue unit, TraumaOne, which serves all of Northeast Florida and Southern Georgia. The trauma team consists of trauma/critical care surgeons, general surgeons and emergency medicine physicians.
Intensive Care Unit (ICU-ED)
This unit is a 19-bed monitored area with five resuscitation bays. Critically ill medical patients and patients who need constant monitoring of their vital signs are evaluated and stabilized in this area.
Pediatric Emergency Center
The department offers a Pediatric Emergency Center with a separate triage area, waiting room and treatment facility for the more than 27,000 pediatric patients the department sees annually. It is equipped to deal with all levels of pediatric care.
Fast Track
Patients with minor complaints, such as the need for a wound recheck or suture removal, simple infections or medicine refills, are triaged to this portion of the Emergency Department to help prevent these patients from being delayed in busier areas of the department.
Intermediate Care
Patients with fractures, lacerations, abdominal pain, otolaryngology, ophthalmology or gynecology emergencies are directed to this area. This area also sees the patients that are typically triaged to Fast Track after it has closed.
