Treatment Options
The partial or total removal of the colon is necessary to remove the diseased portion. Laparoscopic removal of the colon with reconnection of the gut through smaller incisions is frequently possible.
After the surgery, the bowels are usually quiet for a few days prior to their resumption of normal function. Initially, meals may be clear liquids. As bowel function returns, the diet usually progresses to a soft, then full, diet. At the time of discharge from the hospital (seven to ten days after surgery), most patients are eating, having normal bowel movements and walking.
