Orthopaedic surgeons in the Division of Adult Reconstruction evaluate and treat patients with degenerative joint disease, arthritis of the hip or knee, or those requiring joint replacement.
Evaluation and Diagnosis
A history and physical examination are supplemented with blood tests, radiographs (x-rays), computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MRI) scans or bone scans.
The surgeon will talk to the patient about their symptoms and medical history then examine the affected area, as well as related areas. Radiographs are commonly obtained to view the injured or painful area. CTs and MRIs may be ordered as well.
Treatment Options
Treatment options include:
Knee Arthroscopy - This procedure involves the examination and treatment of cartilage tears within the knee joint using a camera and small skin incisions.
Partial Knee Replacement - During this procedure, the surgeon replaces the inside or outside of the knee joint only.
Total Knee Replacement - The procedure involves the complete resurfacing of the knee (thigh bone, shin bone and knee cap).
Partial Hip Replacement - During this procedure, the surgeon replaces of the ball of the hip only.
Total Hip Replacement - The surgeon completely replaces the hip (ball and socket).
