About Jacksonville

Jacksonville, located on the beautiful Northeast Florida coast, offers one million residents a varied lifestyle with complete cultural, recreational and educational opportunities. As the metropolitan anchor for the five-county area dubbed Florida's First Coast, Jacksonville features a unique combination of a vibrant, growing economy and casual living.

Situated on the St. Johns River just 15 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, the city enjoys a temperate climate with seasonal changes. More than 10 miles of uncrowded, sandy beaches are found along the nearby beaches communities, with 74.3 square miles of inland waters available in the area for sailing, fishing, hiking or water skiing.

Jacksonville features abundant and diverse cultural opportunities. The Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, professional and amateur theater, three art museums, a science and history museum and a zoo contribute to a wide variety of events available for the culture buff. In addition, Metropolitan Park is home to numerous outdoor concerts, including the nationally known Jacksonville Jazz Festival.

For the avid traveller, the city is within driving distance of major vacation destinations like Tampa, Orlando, St. Augustine, Savannah (GA) and Daytona Beach.

Jacksonville was the site of the 2005 Super Bowl and is home to the Jacksonville Jaguars NFL team. In addition, the city hosts major tennis and golf tournaments, including the Player's Championship Golf Tournament. For the participant, more than 20 golf course and 400 tennis courts are located throughout the area.

The Jacksonville Landing, a festival marketplace located along the St. Johns River, features a variety of unique shops, eating establishments and special music presentations on its riverfront stage. A short water-taxi ride away is the Jacksonville Riverwalk, a two-mile riverfront boardwalk featuring restaurants, hotels and shopping venues.

The city offers a wealth of education opportunities, housing the public University of North Florida, the private Jacksonville University, Florida State College at Jacksonville and numerous other private and technical schools.

Jacksonville also is an important industrial, banking, insurance, medical and transportation center, with numerous Fortune 500 businesses relocating or expanding operations in the area. The international port, consolidated government and hundreds of nationally recognized companies have contributed to its significance as a center of commerce and industry.
