Facilities

Shands Jacksonville was created in 1999 when Shands HealthCare, the University of Florida, University Medical Center and Methodist Medical Center joined forces to build a premier health resource for northeast Florida.

As an academic medical center, Shands Jacksonville is focused on access to the latest clinical care, research advances and state-of-the-art technology. As an innovator in healthcare, this 760-bed hospital provides highly technical specialty services, including a Level I trauma center, breast health center, cardiovascular center, Level III neonatal intensive care unit, nationally recognized comprehensive stroke program, kidney transplants, Parkinson's center, and Florida Poison Information Center.

In addition to 19 graduate medical education programs and comprehensive programs in diagnosis and treatment, mental health and rehabilitation, the hospital's outpatient facility houses nearly 100 subspecialty programs. These programs are staffed by more than 250 physicians who serve their residency at the hospital. In all, more than 750 University of Florida faculty and community physicians are affiliated with Shands Jacksonville.

The hospital offers an opportunity to study and learn in an exciting academic atmosphere. Through the hospital's commitment to medical education and providing quality healthcare, hundreds of students work and learn at Shands Jacksonville every day. The hospital maintains close working relationships with many four-year higher education institutions, junior colleges and high schools in developing its own training programs.

The School of Medical Technology is an integral part of Shands Jacksonville's clinical laboratories and includes a student classroom, student library and the program director's office. All other areas within the 30,300-square-foot modern laboratory are used in student teaching. The clinical laboratory is well equipped with the latest in methodology and instrumentation and performs more than 2 million test procedures each year.

The Florida-Georgia Blood Alliance is a clinical enrichment site where one day of immunohematology is provided.
