Completion Criteria

METHODS OF EVALUATION

The assessment of knowledge, skills and affective behavior are achieved in the evaluation procedure. These are achieved by written examination, oral and written quizzes, case history problems, unknown identification, laboratory practicals, oral presentations and/or written papers. The instructor in each departmental rotation using a Department Evaluation Form as a clinical performance rating assesses affective behavior.

PASS-FAIL CRITERIA

The final grade for each major course is weighted as follows:

    Departmental grade (practical): 60%
    Lecture series grade (didactic): 30%
    Comprehensive final examination: 10%

An overall grade average of 76% or above is required for successful completion of the program with a minimum of 76% in each major course (combined practical and didactic) and a minimum of 76% on the comprehensive final examination at the end of the year.

Final grades are assigned for each major course based on the following scale:

    93 - 100 = A
    84 - 92 = B
    76 - 83 = C
    70 - 75 = D
    0 - 69 = F

A grade of "C" or better in each course is required before a certificate of completion is awarded by the hospital.

STUDENT GRIEVANCE AND GRADE APPEAL

A three-step student grievance and grade appeal process is also described in the Policy and Procedure Manual. The Policy and Procedure Manual is distributed during the school's student orientation.

GRADUATION AND ELIGIBILITY FOR EXAMINATION

Upon successful completion of the program, a Certificate of Completion is awarded by the Hospital and a baccalaureate degree from the affiliate in which the student is enrolled. The student is then eligible to take national certification examinations offered by several agencies and state licensure by endorsement:

  • Board of Registry: American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP/BOR)
  • National Certification Agency for Clinical Laboratory Personnel (NCA)
  • Florida Department of Health, Board of Clinical Laboratory Personnel (DOH/BCLP)

The awarding of the certificate and/or degree are not contingent upon successfully passing a national certification examination.
