At Shands Jacksonville, our mission to heal, to comfort and to educate guides every interaction with patients, families and visitors. As an academic medical center, we have a deep and abiding history of commitment to education.

The state's first residency program was established here in 1926. In 1967, a formal relationship with the University of Florida began, and in 1988, the urban campus for the university was established at Shands Jacksonville (then University Medical Center).

The relationship between Shands Jacksonville and UF has enabled progressive growth of our educational programs to the benefit of the citizens of Jacksonville and Northeast Florida.

More than 370 UF faculty physicians practice at Shands Jacksonville and teach and train students and young physicians in the latest medical practices. The UF College of Medicine places a high value on the educational experiences obtained at Shands Jacksonville, rotating medical students to the campus on a continual basis. More than 300 residents and fellows train at Shands under the leadership of the UF College of Medicine - Jacksonville.

In addition to the presence of educational training programs for physicians, Shands Jacksonville is also committed to the education of nursing, pharmacists, podiatrists and allied health (CRNA, medical technology, radiologic technology) professionals.

Shands Jacksonville has developed innovative educational programs in community education, creating programs such as Little Miracles, TraumaOne patient education courses, paramedic and military training at the UF Center for Simulation Education and Safety Research, to name but a few.

Great things are being done here. They can be seen every day, in the work that we do and the patients we treat. The results of collaborations taking place here are making a difference around the region and around the world.
